Fly Fishing 101

Double Haul

Probably the most daunting part of learning how to cast a fly rod is how to do it quickly and accurately no matter what kind of weather conditions you are faced with. The double haul is the essential part of fly casting that will help you overcome those trepidations. Albeit, it is one of those things where it can be compared to the same difficulty level as rubbing your belly while you pat your head. Once you've mastered it though, it will be second nature and the beginning step of every cast on the water. In this video, I go over each step of the double haul and even give you some tips on how to break down the cast and work it into your current methodology.

Introduction to Fly Tying

Winter is right around the corner and a favorite pass time of many fly anglers is fly tying. If you have never done any fly tying and have always been interested, this video is for you. In this video, I go over all of the aspects of what you can expect for getting into fly tying. From what tools you need to different materials, I will show you everything you need to know. And who knows, maybe in the future I will even do a series on how to tie various patterns and what you will need for them.

Intermediate Fly Casting

Last week I talked about how to get fishing with a few basic casts. This week here is the real deal. I made a video that is catered specifically how to correctly cast a fly rod. In this video, I break down each function of the cast and what role it plays in the motions.

How to Cast a Fly Rod

We've all been there at one point. How do I cast a fly rod? Well the answer is more simple than you may think. You don't need to perfect the shadow cast you saw in A River Runs Through It to catch fish. In this video, I will show you how to water load cast as well as roll cast your fly rod. With those two casts alone, you'll be catching fish in no time. From there you can master the ways of throwing laser tight loops in the comfort of your front yard.

Different Strike Indicators

You COULD go through the process that I did when I got into fly fishing. Trying different sorts of strike indicators, seeing which ones work and which ones don't. OR you could watch this video where I go over each of the common strike indicators and their design so you can make an informed decision next time you're at the fly shop.  Remember not all strike indicators are created equal. Some won't accurately show you a strike and some will end up in the bushes.

Streamer Season Gear Must Haves

Streamer season is literally right around the corner. If you've never streamer fished, this is the video for you. In this video, I go over exactly what you need in order to be successful this streamer season. Paired with our recent blog on how to fish streamers, the dream of catching trophy brown trout this year is just a matter of getting out on the water. We even have the perfect collection of streamers to jump start your streamer box if you are starting from ground zero.

How To Rig Your Flies

When getting started in any new hobby or sport, there are basics that everyone needs to know. In this week's video, we go over how to rig your flies in the 3 most common setups. This isn't an end all be all comprehensive list, in fact I plan to revisit this video to talk about some of my favorite alternatives. This is just a guide to get new anglers exploring the different possibilities on how to set up their flies and hit the water with the confidence they need to catch fish. |In this video, I cover a traditional nymph rig, the dry dropper rig and things to look out for when fishing just a dry fly. With these three different styles of rigs, you can begin to explore what style works best for you and start tweaking your technique to produce the results you're looking for.

Choosing your first fly rod

Have you walked into a fly shop and been overwhelmed at all the different options in fly rods they have available? Or perhaps you life so far away from your "local" fly shop that making a trip down there is an all day excursion. Well I'm going to help you with that. In this video, I am going to cover what you need to know about choosing your first fly rod. Going over 3 common weight categories most fresh water anglers will own at some point in their fly fishing career, I talk about the basics of the capabilities of each rod and what fishing styles those rods provide. Although this video isn't an end all be all video for the buying process, I feel as though its a good starting point in helping you make the decision of which fly rod to begin with.
